| appearance Weighing in at a mere 110 lbs (59 kg) and standing at 5'9" (179 cm) if he were to straighten his back out of its characteristic slouch, L has an extremely lanky build with long limbs and delicate bone structure. His arms, legs, and chest are nevertheless toned with lean muscle as a result of regular capoeira practice. His most striking physical features are his enormous eyes which seem to be endlessly alert and rarely, if ever, blink. Their color is a deep blue but they appear black from a distance due to the excessive dilation of his pupils. They are framed by the dark circles of many sleepless nights. His skin is extremely pale due to lack of sunlight exposure, only adding to his rather sickly appearance. His straight, thick black hair flies about his head in careless disarray, cut unevenly to just longer than chin-length and falling messily over his eyes. L also has many behavioral quirks which define his appearance. He never stands up straight and when he sits he gathers his knees to his chest. Whenever he holds an item he does so very delicately, usually pinched between two fingers, as if the sensation of touch is too overwhelming for him. He dresses in extremely comfortable clothes (typically a plain white sweatshirt and a pair of baggy blue jeans) and does not wear shoes or socks unless forced. His toes are extremely long and dexterous, frequently wiggling, curling, or grabbing at things. To those with shinigami eyes, L's true name and lifespan do not appear any longer, as if he is already dead. After his transformation into an onryo, L looks considerably more lifeless, with impossibly pale skin that takes on a bluish or greenish tint. Depending on his mood, he may also shimmer with a glowing aura. He occasionally dresses in feminine Indian attire. personality At first appearance L might strike someone as completely devoid of emotion. However, this is certainly not the case. An autistic savant, L has an extremely analytical mind that distances him from normal social interaction. At times he might come off as mocking or cold, lacking the empathy that normal people use to guard their words and actions. He often speaks honestly about his thoughts to the point of bluntness. Although he may seem irritated, he never loses his temper nor does he react to others' displays of anger (yet he will meet violence with equal violence as a self defense). Sometimes L will say and do things simply to get a reaction, for he is always intensely interested in scrutinizing people's behavior. Everything can be potentially studied and he has no concept of privacy or personal space when it comes to others. Ironically, he himself is extremely private to the point of paranoia. He keeps his real name secret, never discusses his emotions, and keeps himself shut away from the world. Although he frequently leans over or touches others, he reacts poorly to being touched unexpectedly by another. He has many nervous habits which include biting his fingers, stacking objects, or eating. He is almost always eating when he has to concentrate, and he will eat nothing but sweet foods. He claims that sugar aids his brain functions. Above all, the most important aspect to L's personality is his competitiveness. He must always win, no matter the cost, and there must never be any doubt over his victory. This drives his need to produce proof for any theory he develops, or to die trying. strengths & abilities L is the greatest detective of his world. Until the Kira case, there was never a quandary he was confronted with that he could not solve. He has a brilliant mind, a genius that has inspired a wave of successors trying desperately to emulate him. He is an expert in the fields of criminal psychology, justice, and investigation. He is also a skilled hacker and cryptographer, talents which are aided by the fact that he has eidetic memory and is capable of noticing and recalling the smallest details. He speaks dozens of languages fluently, is a champion of tennis and chess, and is a master of capoeira. Now that he has evolved into a yōkai with Shukaku's help, L has gained the ability to drain the life out of his surroundings. Plants die when he is near, the air gets colder, food rots faster, and ordinary people feel weaker or mildly ill in his presence if he does not consciously control his chakra. With training he has learned to control this ability better. Simply by concentrating, he could draw the life force out of his target and absorb it into himself, healing any wounds he may have sustained or restoring himself to life temporarily. He can also do the opposite, drawing the wounds off of another and onto himself, but this ability is not perfected yet. weaknesses L's greatest weakness is his pride. When solving a case, he must not only find the answer to every question, but he must prove it to himself with solid evidence or it doesn't seem "right". Everything must be done in a way that meets his narrow standards. When L develops a hypothesis he will continue to test it until he is satisfied with the results. If there is no proof to be found he falls into depression caused by self-doubt. Normally he is extremely confident in his ability to analyze a situation and he falls apart if he is failing. L is willing to go so far as to use his own life as a sacrifice simply to prove his theories to himself. He requires the same commitment from others, holding everyone he works with to high standards. His expectations from people combined with his general distrust of them has socially alienated him. He will say and do things to get answers regardless of how others will feel about it. He is childishly selfish in this regard. Still, he is extremely lonely and longs for the company of someone who understands his mind, even if that someone is the same person who is plotting to murder him. As a yōkai, L's weaknesses have become exaggerated. He has a short temper and will pursue targets mercilessly, often with the intent to hurt or kill, especially if they pose a threat to the people he has sworn to protect. He has become extremely dependent on Shukaku and his "children", the successors from Wammy's House. If he is isolated for too long without them, he falls into a despairing and unstable state, unable to think of anything but those beloved people. notable possessions Demonic sand • Shukaku has given L vials of his own sand, infused with his chakra and conscious so that it can recognize and follow any orders issued by L. It primarily acts as a defense to shield L from any attacks automatically, but L can also wield it offensively. Tsuki's Death Note • L obtained the shinigami Light's notebook with the intention of guarding and then destroying it. This notebook has the power to kill. If the user knows the target's face and real name, the target will die when their name is written, in whatever manner is specified. history On Halloween of 1979, a newborn baby was abandoned at a hospital in Europe, his origins entirely unknown. Non-communicative and prone to fits of crying, L spent his early life in orphanages with normal children and nurses who did not understand him. At the age of eight he was discovered by the great inventor Quillish Wammy and transferred to Wammy's House, an orphanage for gifted children in Winchester, England. He thrived in this environment as a child prodigy, devouring information that was taught to him and displaying an incredible amount of analytical genius. Solving crime became a favorite pastime and when he reached adolescence he was already assisting local law enforcement. He was a world-renowned detective by the time he turned fifteen. As a young adult, L traveled the world solving great mysteries that no one else could unravel. He was always accompanied by Quillish Wammy, who assumed the alias Watari and served as an intermediary for the secretive L, who never showed his face to anyone. These precautions proved to be wise when a mass murderer known as Kira appeared in the world. Kira seemed to have the ability to kill simply by knowing the name and face of his victim, causing heart attacks in criminals around the world. This mystifying case intrigued L and drove him to turn his entire focus on Kira. The Kira investigation very quickly lead L to Japan, where he pinpointed the killer's location to be centered in the Kanto region. Allying himself with the National Police Agency's task force, L eventually came to suspect Light Yagami, the son of Chief Detective Soichiro Yagami. He went so far as to follow Light to college and revealed his identity as L in order to observe Light's reactions. When a second Kira appeared, L pointed the finger at Light's girlfriend, Misa Amane. When she was apprehended for questioning, Light asked to be confined as well, citing worries that he might be Kira and suffering from disassociative amnesia. For two weeks the killings stopped while the pair were in confinement, but when criminals suddenly began dying again L was forced to admit his error and released them from their cells, albeit with close surveillance. L handcuffed himself to Light and announced that they, along with the task force and Misa, would be living together in a new investigation headquarters. As L and Light worked together to solve the Kira case, the two formed a close bond. Light was L's only friend and an intellectual match, and L began to hope in his heart that he was wrong, that Light was not a murderer, in spite of the certainty in his mind. The two of them made a brilliant team despite conflicting morals and L's repeated assertion that he still believed Light to be the original Kira. After many months they managed to capture the third Kira, Kyosuke Higuchi, and discovered that the method of killing was a notebook possessed by a shinigami named Rem. Before they could question this Kira further, however, Higuchi suffered a heart attack and died. With the notebook safely locked away and the third Kira's identity discovered, L was forced to release Misa Amane from the headquarters and removed the handcuffs which connected him to Light. Light, despite being free to go, decided to remain at headquarters to continue the search for Kira. This made L uneasy, for he sensed a clear change in the atmosphere since the notebook had been found. He knew that it was no longer he who was watching Light, but Light who was watching him. He could feel that the end was approaching. Ultimately, L realized that the only way to prove that Light and Misa are the first and second Kira was to test the notebook and the rule that claimed a user would die if he did not continue writing names every 13 days. He announced his plan knowing that it would force Light to make a move to kill him before the test could be performed. He was correct. Light manipulated the shinigami Rem to write L's real name down in her notebook. L collapsed into Light's arms as his heart was failing. The last thing he saw was Light's victorious smirk, and he closed his eyes assured that he had been right all along. When he awoke he was in a world that was neither heaven nor hell.
